Who We Are

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a Christian denomination rooted in the Lutheran tradition, shaped by the conviction that we are justified by grace through faith, not by our own efforts. It emphasizes God’s love made known in Jesus Christ and believes that faith is lived out through service, justice, and care for the neighbor. The ELCA values the authority of Scripture while also engaging theology thoughtfully, trusting that God continues to speak into a changing world. It is committed to welcoming all people, fostering inclusive community, and addressing issues of poverty, racism, climate care, and peace. At its heart, the ELCA calls people to grow in faith and to live that faith boldly and humbly in daily life.

The Greater Milwaukee Synod (GMS) is a geographic grouping of congregations, extending from Sheboygan down to the Illinois border and from Lake Michigan to the western edge of Waukesha County. We are one of 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). This synod is made up of 115 congregations, 4 Synod Authorized Worshiping Communities, and 59,143 baptized members in southeastern Wisconsin led by Bishop Paul D. Erickson and a 17-member synod council.

Since 1974, ReconcilingWorks: Lutherans for Full Participation has advocated for the full welcome, inclusion, and equity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual/aromantic (LGBTQIA+) Lutherans in all aspects of the life of their Church, congregations, and community.
